Fabric Scrap Christmas Tree Ornaments

These fabric scrap trees make adorable Christmas tree ornaments or gift tags or toppers. They’re fun for kids and adults to make, and a great way to use up scraps of leftover material from larger sewing projects.

Cardboard and Fabric Scrap Christmas Tree Ornaments

When I’m crafting with my daycare kids, I love to repurpose materials from around the house and the recycle bin. It keeps crafting costs down, encourages us to be resourceful and creative, and it gives a second life to items that would normally end up in landfill.

Fabric scraps and cardboard are a two of my favourite materials to repurpose, so I always have a big stash of both in the craft cupboard. They come in especially handy for making Christmas ornaments.

Crafting with fabric is such a delight for kids. They love rifling through our scrap bin, examining all the different colours, textures and patterns. They get a kick out of finding fabrics they’ve used in other projects too. Not only is fabric a treat for their eyes and their sense of touch, working with small pieces, like we are for this project, is great for fine-motor skills.

Fabric Scrap Christmas Tree Ornaments

  1. Cut Out Cardboard Tree

Cut a simple triangular tree (with trunk) out of a piece of cardboard.

  2. Cut Fabric Scraps

Cut your fabric into small pieces. Don’t worry about the shape of your pieces, just chop them up so you’ll be able to fit quite a few on your cardboard tree.

  3. Glue Fabric to Cardboard

Glue your fabric pieces to the cardboard. Overlap the pieces and extend them beyond the edges of the cardboard for full coverage. The edges will look a bit messy, but don’t worry. We’ll take care of that in the next step. fabric scraps glued to cardboard christmas trees

  4. Trim Excess

Trim all around the edges of the cardboard to cut away any excess fabric and tidy up the edges of your ornament.3 fabric covered cardboard trees with excess fabric trimmed off

  5. Add Hanging Thread
